Electric Scooter vs Rickshaw vs Petrol Bike: The Cheapest Way to Commute in Lahore

May 17, 20266 min read

Every Lahore commuter eventually asks the same question: what is the cheapest way to get to work and back every day? Rickshaw fares keep climbing, petrol stays expensive, and an electric scooter promises pennies-per-kilometre running costs. So which one actually wins? Let's compare the real monthly cost of the cheapest commute in Lahore across all three.

The Typical Lahore Commute

Let's use a realistic example: a daily round trip of about 25–35 km, five to six days a week — say, Johar Town to Gulberg, or DHA to the city centre. That works out to roughly 1,500 km a month. We will price each option against that.

Option 1: Daily Rickshaw / Ride-Hailing

Convenient, but the most expensive over time. A single one-way trip of 12–15 km across Lahore can cost several hundred rupees, and two trips a day, six days a week, add up fast — often PKR 20,000–30,000+ a month depending on distance and surge pricing. You also have zero control over availability, waiting times, or fare hikes.

  • Upfront cost: none.
  • Monthly cost: very high.
  • Control: none.

Option 2: Petrol Bike (70cc)

The traditional choice. A 70cc bike doing 1,500 km a month burns roughly PKR 9,000–10,000 in fuel alone — before oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, tyres, and workshop visits. Add those and real monthly running cost climbs higher still.

  • Upfront cost: moderate.
  • Monthly fuel: PKR 9,000–10,000.
  • Plus maintenance: regular and ongoing.

Option 3: Electric Scooter

The same 1,500 km on home charging costs about PKR 500–600 a month in electricity. There is no petrol, no oil changes, no spark plugs, and far fewer moving parts to maintain.

  • Upfront cost: from PKR 95,000 (or spread over installments up to 24 months).
  • Monthly charging: PKR 500–600.
  • Maintenance: minimal.

The Real Monthly Comparison

For a 1,500 km/month commute:

  • Rickshaw / ride-hailing: PKR 20,000–30,000+
  • Petrol bike: PKR 9,000–10,000 (fuel) + maintenance
  • Electric scooter: PKR 500–600

The electric scooter is not a little cheaper — it is dramatically cheaper. Against a petrol bike, you save on the order of PKR 8,500+ every month in fuel alone. Against a rickshaw, the saving is far larger.

What About the Upfront Cost?

This is the one fair point in favour of "just take a rickshaw" — there is nothing to buy. But the maths flips quickly. The monthly fuel saving versus a petrol bike (roughly PKR 8,500) means a scooter like the PKR 135,000 Evee Mito+ effectively pays for its fuel-cost difference within about a year and a half — and then keeps saving you money for years after. With installment plans, you can ride now and pay across 24 months while your fuel bill drops from day one.

Which Electric Scooter for Commuting?

  • Tight budget, short commute: Evee Flipper (PKR 95,000) or Mito+ (PKR 135,000).
  • Standard daily commute: Evee Gen-Z (PKR 175,000) — power, range, and three ride modes.
  • Longer or faster routes: Evee S1 (PKR 210,000) or the S1 Air flagship.
